The Most Popular Dog Names of 2019 Revealed

December means snow, cookies, and holiday shopping, but it's also another year of pet parenting in the books. To celebrate those 12 months of boops and snuggles, Rover has released their annual list of this year's most popular pet names. They dive deep into their database of over one million pets to learn what names people just can't get enough of.

And it turns out, this list isn't much of a surprise.

While pop culture themes are on the rise, those modern names can't compete with old classics. The top five dog names have been basically the same for the past five years. Those most popular names are:

  • Max
  • Charlie
  • Cooper
  • Buddy
  • Rocky (the only new name in the top five!)

  • Bella
  • Luna
  • Lucy
  • Daisy
  • Lily

Rocky is the only new name that managed to wedge it's way into these coveted top spots. But as we look farther down the list, we uncover trends that marked 2019 as a year we'll never forget.

Arya (as in Arya Stark) is up 150% from 2018 thanks to the 'Game of Thrones' series finale.

Keanu is another name that stands out. It's up 93%, and that's no surprise considering how the world fell in love with Keanu Reeves after the new John Wick movie.

Other movie-inspired dog names include Buzz, Woody, and Slinky Dog from Toy Story fame. Nebula, Black Widow, and Thanos are also on the rise fueled by hoards of Marvel fans.

It seems pet owners are also on board for this year's strides in the legalization of marijuana. Dank, Indica, Herb, and Kush all rose in popularity in 2019.

You'll find the complete list of the top 100 dog names on Rover.
